For days, friends have been texting, WhatsApping and emailing me their new job plans: boxer, football referee, baker, actor… all courtesy of the Government's new careers advice service online questionnaire. The idea that any of my middle-aged friends could be able to retrain as any of those particular jobs was in itself fairly hilarious. Let alone whether they would be wanted, after training.  A 50-year-old with a degree in history and politics, mid-menopause and short-sighted is not a natural fit for a career in pugilism yet that’s what the latest mutant algorithm to invade our lives has suggested. ...
